High-Functioning Alcoholics – Moms Can Do It, Too

I wanted to follow-up on yesterday’s post by sharing this important post by Sarah Allen Benton, L.M.H.C., who writes a blog, The HIgh-Funcitoning Alcoholic, for PyschologoyToday.com.

Ms. Benton’s October 20 blog post, “Mothers Can Be High-Functioning Alcoholics, Too!” is excellent (she was also a guest on the Oprah Show – The Diane Schuler Story, by the way). Here is a cut and past of her opening paragraph:

The most shocking aspect about the mother drunk driving tragedies recently in the news, such as the Diane Schuler Taconic Parkway crash and deaths of 8, is the public’s surprise that mothers can have alcohol problems. Specifically, one NY Times parenting blog about this issue was titled “How could a Mother Drive Drunk?” http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/05/two-quick-updates-o…alcoholism. Considering that type of judgment, my question is how can fathers, teachers, executives, politicians, physicians and honors students drive drunk? Read more…
