Mom. Business Woman. Alcoholic. A Mother Climbs Out of the Depths of Her Addiction
She stood on the sidelines amid the blankets and camp chairs, a petite, brown-haired woman in a monogrammed polo shirt, cheering as her 7-year-old son sprinted down the soccer field.
At halftime, she stepped up with a water bottle and pep talk. And after the game ended in a 4-0 loss, she circulated among the pint-size players as the designated “team mom,” passing out apple slices, pretzels and peanut butter crackers.
“Good job, guys,” she said brightly as she tousled hair, patted shoulders and gave high-fives. “You did really well.”

Assessing Your Alcohol Risk
…I didn’t grow up with active alcoholism, but I did grow up with a parent who could never control his rage. When I was in my early thirties, an astute therapist sent me to an Al-Anon Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting. They read a list of ACOA personality traits, and I mentally checked off 16 out of 19 of them as the list was read. Who knew? Well, the therapist did, fortunately for me. I found out a few years later that my father’s father was an alcoholic. I had never met the man, since he died about 10 years before I was born.
