Back in the 60 they never would say you had ADD or ADHD. We were given extra
classes in reading and comprehension. I scored the highest in my math skills, always.
My gramar was top of the line also.

Two nephews and a niece were given Ritalin for ADD, the Board of Education demanded it
of my sister for my two nephews; their chance for a good life is robbed from them.

We are all born with a purpose, to demand that we be like you is kind of facist; is it not?

After paxil left me with malignant neoplasms of the brain, hypothyroidism, syncope etc.

I sing and entertain at retirement homes and government long term care facilities.

We are not the ones with psychiatric disorders!

Terry Walker BBA, Cert. in computer studies.
Reconciliation Accountant.

n.b. paxil also robbed me of my ability to reconcile financial accounts along with
my gramar skills

Where substance abuse problems are concerned, ADHD is a very big risk factor. You've got a disorder involving problems with the brain's dopamine pathways (dopamine being the target for many drugs of addiction), combined with symptoms that include impulsive behavior, poor self-control, an inability to fully assess risk....and then once you add into the mix the academic problems and employment difficulties that are tend to follow people with ADHD, it's just a perfect storm for too many people. Medical literature has estimated that as many as 50% of ADHD patients whose ADHD persists into adulthood will develop a substance abuse disorder in their lifetimes. (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=18324334#R1)

Ironically, treatment with stimulant medications appears to drastically lower the risks of substance abuse...although it is probably true that proper treatment for any mental illness will reduce these risks.
