The Brain Can Heal!

One of the key components of my new book, If You Loved Me, You’d Stop!, is the new brain research on addiction. I found the research on how “alcohol hijacks the brain” to be a turning point for me because I could fully embrace the notion of that alcoholism is a disease, “a chronic, relapsing brain disease.” (1)

The flip side of this new research is that the brain can heal (when alcohol use is stopped) which offers great hope to alcoholics and their families. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor’s, a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist, story of how she recovered from a massive stroke as written in her book, My Stroke of Insight, and discussed on The Oprah Winfrey Show, provides additional proof that the brain can heal – great hope for anyone grappling with a loved one’s addiction to alcohol (or other drugs).
